Navigate during the Easter week… or ¿was it during navigation week?
It has already started a new year, and with it new water projects and purposes. Planning our nautical year often goes trough to decide what to do during Easter. What special thing could Easter navigation bring? For many, its usually at this time celebration when they first encounter with the sea that year. Many boaters will take the opportunity to participate in the now classic races like the «Ruta de la sal», or «Regata Ophiusa», as the most massive of Spanish nautical panorama, or other more local.
In Nautic Ocean, our proposal is based on a holy week that aims to route the island of Lanzarote with several boats sailing preserved. It is often a unique opportunity for those who start and want to go gain experience, or those that already have many miles on their backs, and they have kept the skis to dust off their wetsuit and take for started the sailing season.
You can participate in these races wether being owner of a vessel or not; as there are many boat rental companies that offer packages «square to square» to all those that they desire to participate. Prices tend to be between 400 and 500 € and typically include registration in the race, boat rental, and skipper.
The organization of these races, in which can participate well nourished fleets, often have a welcoming dinner during the Wednesday before departure. An early meeting on Thursday before departing is celebrated by the skippers, where the sailing instructions and the latest weather occur are discussed. After sailing more than 120 miles, and since the boats are perfectly moored in the destination port, all participants are called to the awards ceremony, which being made pleasant by a dinner, usually takes place on Saturday. On Sunday the boats return to their place of destination.
Typical races arriving to Balearic Islands
The «Ruta de la Sal», is a classic in the world of offshore racing, perhaps one of the sailing events which brings greater number of vessels in the Mediterranean. The itinerary has two versions: the northern version departing from Castelldefels (Barcelona), and the version leaving from Denia. Both versions have their destiny in Sant Antoni de Portmany, in Ibiza, with a distance of 140 and 120 miles respectively.
Meanwhile, the «Regata Ophiusa», somewhat younger, but fully consolidated, celebrates this 2014 its 21st edition. The tour starts in the Catalan town of Sitges and ends on the idyllic island of Formentera. a great opportunity to visit Formentera in its purest form, nothing to do with which we can find in August. Here boaters have to undertake a tactical added incentive of having to decide whether to leave the island of Ibiza by port or starboard. The minimum distance is 161 miles.
Your inseparable friend
A common factor that tend to have sailing in Easter in peninsula and the Balearic Islands, is a complicated weather. Almost certainly, we can say that either our voyage outward or return, will face some «friendly» weather conditions. Of course this is not due to any physical law, but in practice is usually a fairly recurrent event in time.
Perfect for begginers
For those who have just obtained their new titration, these races have an important attraction, allowing «to train» in this world by the hand of skippers who put their experience and their boats serving live on an exciting adventure.
The skipper will assign functions to each crew member and set the night watches. No experience is required, and will be addressed to the nautical level of each of the crew. The novel navigator will take comfort participating in the meeting held by skippers just before departure. There, they can put into practice their newly acquired knowledge on marine meteorology and strategies that the pattern determined on the basis of this, the boat, the experience level of the crew, and other exogenous factors.
What to expect about the competition
While navigating, and always at the discretion of the skipper, you’ll actively participate in maneuvers such as lifting, lowering sails, curling, tacking, jibing, taking a position on the charts, wheel position in radio, listen to the weather forecast will participate and prepare food, hot drinks for guards, etc. Of course everything is not «racing» and not everyone has that competitive spirit treasure. All these Races can not be defined as extremely competitive, at least for most participants, although it incorporates the added classification, and the pressure of trying to do better than others. Here I mention what a good friend and navigator always told me about it: «The only pressure I know is the one from beer that the innkeeper serves me after sailing …»
How to enjoy Easter navigation
Indeed there are plenty of ways to enjoy the sea and sailing, and there is also the possibility of any other route suggested by any of the Yacht Charter companies operating along our coast and islands. These companies usually schedule catamaran sailing trips with a more or less detailed itinerary in which you will try to enjoy sailing but in a more relaxed way. Travel «square to square» or price sold by cabin are often used, including the rental of the boat, and skipper. We expect that a common fund will be made to build other expenses such as:
-Mooring outside normal if you choose to visit other ports and Marinas.
-Food and drink
