San Ginés Race: Las Palmas – Lanzarote – Agadir (Morocco).
Probably the oldest regatta in Spain. His first edition took place in 1947. It appeared as a challenge of some daring attached sailors from the Gran Canaria Yatch Club. They dared to sail with the wind and sea coming from the bow. And they did so from the Club previously said to the island of Lanzarote, of which separation was about 111 nautical miles. The LXIII edition will take place on the next 16th of August, from the RCN in the port of Las Palmas. And with a distance of about 110 nautical miles. The destination is the Port of La Luz in Arrecife, in Lanzarote. ¿What does the San Ginés Race can offer to you?
A tremendous effort was rewarded when arriving at the island of Lanzarote. That is due to the people of Lanzarote rewarded the daring and exhausted sailors with a warm welcome. This arrival occurred during the festivities of the capital of the island, San Gines. That explains why, over time, this race took its name.
Currently, the boats and technological advances have brought greater safety and comfort to the race. Although it remains one of the toughest races on the national scene, not surprisingly much of the regatta is taken at night.
The arrival of the boats to port coincides exactly with the day of San Gines. The celebrations those days is about Chalanistas parties, a great expectation and a festive atmosphere.
The different Sections
The San Gines Regatta, in its second section, will take place on the 20th of August. It will be between the Arrecife – Lanzarote and Agadir-Morocco. And its route is about 200 nautical miles, whith a time investment of 35 to 40 hours.
Navigate 200 miles against the foreseeable Alisios seems to us a very attractive challenge for any seasoned navigator. Also with the extra incentive of reaching a city like Agadir, with a huge nautical and tourist attraction. It is located in the region of Souss-Massa-Drâa, with the internationally known Souss-Massa National Park.
